A new library branch just opened up next to the building where I work, so I checked it out on my lunch break one day. I found an excellent book entitled "Astro Boy Essays" by Frederik L Schodt. 215 pages. This sounds like a children's book but it isn't. Here is why I found it to be a fantastic read.
Like many westerners, my primary exposure to Japanese culture is through the Japanese animated programs or anime for short. This book talks about the birth of anime and the social context that it was created in. Further, it shows how the anime art form has influenced Japanese (and world) culture so profoundly.
The book covers Osamu Tezuka the creator of Mighty Atom (or Astro Boy as the he was known in the west) and the manga/anime revolution. It details quite well how this revolution influenced generations of Japanese, driving the popularity of science and robotics in much of the population.
If you are a fan of anime, if you are interested in Japanese culture, or if you grew up watching Mighty Atom or Astro Boy, you should definitely take the time to read this well presented book.
