A couple of friends of mine and I were security geeks in high school, and for fun we would try to defeat security systems (basically get into places we weren't supposed to be in) without leaving any traces. This particular time it was a computer lab in the middle of the night. We triggered a silent alarm.
The police rolled up on us pretty quickly. We dove out the window and fled through a nearby field of brambles to evade capture. We attempted to circle around to get back to our car, but the police had stationed a cop in an unmarked compact car at a nearby intersection looking for anyone suspicious. Two youths walking around at 3 in the morning qualified, and we got an escort to the greybar motel.
The prosecutor was threatening me with a number of "a" felonies (all the recent break-ins in the area). I was 19 and had no resources, so I sold my only valuable possessions (my brand new college PC, a limited edition Apple IIgs signed by Steve Wosniak himself, and my sweet Toyota Celica Supra) and tried to get decent representation. For $7500, I thought I had an ok lawyer, but he turned out to be not much better than a public defender. He did take all my money. So I plead to a class 'c' felony as part of a plea. I got 30 days in county and a ton of community service (which I never did) . I returned for another 30 days in county a year later to clear my balance and spent my 20th birthday in jail.
20 years later and this still impacts my life. Being a felon (even a minor one in the distant past) is a label that continues to cause problems. Even if I pay thousands to get my conviction expunged, I still can't get anything deleted from any of the federal databases, so there is little point in doing it at all. I've had to declare it for jobs, and been banned from owning or even holding any type of firearms, even for hunting (which is what I want one for).
Breaking the law was fun. Getting caught breaking the law totally sucked.
